The Blue Ridge Turkey Trot

It's that time of the year when those who love turkey and love to run come together for the 2013 Blue Ridge Turkey Trot. Join us at the Downtown Park on Main Street on Thanksgiving Day, November the 28th, 8:00 A.M. for a 5K race/walk. Registration begins at 7:00am and the 5K run begins at 8:00am. The race is for all ages and all abilities from walkers to the serious competitor. Proceeds from the Blue Ridge Turkey Trot go towards local charities. Click here to register

Old-fashioned holiday celebration in downtown Blue Ridge. The 2013 schedule starts off with Tuba Christmas (see 30 to 40 Tuba players all decked out for Christmas play your favorite Christmas songs) performing at 10:30 a.m.

Mr. and Mrs. Santa Claus arrive on the Blue Ridge Scenic Railway at 11:15. There will be a parade at 11:30. Live music throughout the day. Trackless train rides around town. and much more!

Lighting of the tree will be between 6 and 7 followed by live music from 7 to 8 p.m. Downtown shops will be open late so bring the whole family for a holiday of fun, perfect to start the season off right. Call 706-632-5680 with questions.

Humorist Jean Shepherd's memoir of growing up in the midwest in the 1940s follows nine-year-old Ralphie Parker in his quest to get a genuine Red Ryder BB gun under the tree for Christmas. Ralphie pleads his case before his mother, his teacher, and even Santa Claus himself, at Goldblatt's Department Store. The consistent response: "You'll shoot your eye out." All the elements from the beloved motion picture are here, including the family's temperamental exploding furnace; Scut Farkas, the school bully; the boys' experiment with a wet tongue on a cold lamppost; the Little Orphan Annie decoder pin; Ralphie's father winning a lamp shaped like a woman's leg in a net stocking; Ralphie's fantasy scenarios and more.
